Dating back to 1778 William Clark founded a Drapers store in London selling fabulous fabrics, bonnets, parasols and gloves. A few years later in 1813 William Debenham decided to invest in the business and the store became Clark & Debenham. The company expanded and a new store laws opened outside of London in Cheltenham, business soared thanks to the strict code of etiquette and clothing during the Victorian years. Later in 1851 the business was renamed to Debenham & Freebody when Clement and Freebody invested in the firm and diversified to start selling fabrics and accessories to dressmakers and large retailers. Over the coming years the business grew from strength to strength and acquired a number of wholes and manufacturing business as well as opening offices across the globe. In 1905 Debenhams Ltd was created and later in 1919 merged with Marshall & Snellgrove and purchased the infamous Knightsbridge retailer Harvey Nichols in 1920. In 1928 the Debenham family decide to leave the company allowing the business to become public and by 1950 Debenhams had become the UK’s largest group department store boasting over 110 stores. Between 1985 and 1998 Debenhams became part of the Burton Group but later demerged and was listed in its own right on the London Stock Exchange until 2003 after it was purchased by Baroness Retail Ltd.
