Jack Cohen opened the doors of the first Tesco back in 1919 in the East End of London. In 1924 he started selling his own brand of tea and named the shop Tesco, a name made up from the “Co” of his name and initials of his supplier TE Stockwell. In 1929 Jack Cohen opened a 2nd store, the first named Tesco, in Edgware. In 1932 Tesco became Tesco Stores Limited.
In 1934 Tesco bought a plot of land in Edmonton and built the country’s first head office and warehouse, creating the new concept of central stock control. Subsequently, Tesco opened new stores throughout the UK and in 1961 Tesco was included in the Guinness Book of Records when its store in Leicester became the largest retail outlet in Europe.
In 1968 Tesco opened the first Superstore in Crawley and in 1974 introduced a petrol/diesel forecourt at a number of their stores. In 2000 Tesco.com was launched.
In addition to its UK operations, Tesco has opened stores across the world, introducing the brand to markets as diverse as the USA, China and Turkey.
Tesco pride themselves on being market leaders and innovators, as well as consistently offering their customers low prices and value for money. Remember to add one of our fantastic Tesco promotional codes at the checkout stage of your order.
